I really want to like this iteration. Whittaker is charming and smart. But the writing is awful, the stories overly preachy, and, as you note, the companions don’t have a purpose. Keep the actors, fire the whole lot of writers, and put some actual Whovians back at the helm. It isn’t hopeless yet.
