Actually, no. If we did have policies that included ensuring people took the medicines they needed for severe mental illness, we wouldn't nearly the young-white-male shooters wreaking havoc on public spaces. Most, if not all of the public trauma has been perpetrated by people who have been diagnosed with some form of mental illness. (I am NOT implying that people with mental illnesses are more likely to be violent, but that these violent men do have some form of untreated psychosis, schizophrenia, and/or paranoia.) Enforced medication might also help with homelessness, vagrancy, and other social issues. Unlike the UK, here we cannot force people to take medication--even at the risk of public safety.
